3D TV - Do we really need it?

I first learned about 3D TV a few weeks ago when I saw Premiership Football being advertised, in 3D, in numerous pubs and bars around Ireland and the UK. I was intrigued at the idea, but I thought, is there really a need for it? Sky were showing their live matches in selected pubs. All you need is a Sky+HD box.

But I thought, OK this sounds really futuristic and may look very well but surely after the first time the novelty would surely wear off. We've all watched a film in 3D but if given the option, I'm sure we wouldn't pick the 3D version over the normal version every time. Going back to the sporting aspect of watching television, usually when a large sporting event is on such as the All-Ireland Final, Champions League Final or the Superbowl, large crowds will congregate at a pub or house to watch the event in the company of others. Now, for 3D TV to entertain to us, we will all need the specifically designed glasses. This is where I feel the idea will lose a few fans as surely the owner will not have enough glasses to go around for everyone?

And that is just for sport. Can you imagine having to wear these glasses, just to watch on television? Then what about us that already have to wear glasses. Not the easiest thing to do, watch television wearing two pairs of glasses. I recently had to do it to watch Avatar in 3D and i must say it took way from my experience and I definitely enjoyed the normal version more.

This is why I believe 3D TV will not be a mass success, with in my opinion, only the market area of bachelors showing interest!
