3D TV - Do we really need it?

I first learned about 3D TV a few weeks ago when I saw Premiership Football being advertised, in 3D, in numerous pubs and bars around Ireland and the UK. I was intrigued at the idea, but I thought, is there really a need for it? Sky were showing their live matches in selected pubs. All you need is a Sky+HD box.

But I thought, OK this sounds really futuristic and may look very well but surely after the first time the novelty would surely wear off. We've all watched a film in 3D but if given the option, I'm sure we wouldn't pick the 3D version over the normal version every time. Going back to the sporting aspect of watching television, usually when a large sporting event is on such as the All-Ireland Final, Champions League Final or the Superbowl, large crowds will congregate at a pub or house to watch the event in the company of others. Now, for 3D TV to entertain to us, we will all need the specifically designed glasses. This is where I feel the idea will lose a few fans as surely the owner will not have enough glasses to go around for everyone?

And that is just for sport. Can you imagine having to wear these glasses, just to watch on television? Then what about us that already have to wear glasses. Not the easiest thing to do, watch television wearing two pairs of glasses. I recently had to do it to watch Avatar in 3D and i must say it took way from my experience and I definitely enjoyed the normal version more.

This is why I believe 3D TV will not be a mass success, with in my opinion, only the market area of bachelors showing interest!

Interactive Advertising

We all know the effects of a viral video, and also how the internet can affect people's perceptions of certain products. But it is possible to combine both? Is it possible to create a viral ouput that will convince the Web 2.0 population, or consumers, to but a product? Many companies believe they can.

"Engagement Advertising" has been created by Facebook in the believe that it will result in big revenue streams for the businesses. Social networks can be pretty convincing and should I see that two of my friends "like" a certain product, that usually means I should check out the product too. According to Statbrain, Facebook has 73,323,054 visitors per day. If only 1% of this traffic likes your product, it's still 733,323 potential customers along with their friends. it surely would pay off to advertise on that sight.

In my opinion, the added benefit of Interactive Advertising is feedback from your potential customers, they can ad vital input into the production of your product or service. But also key to this is knowing what product to offer to certain consumers. A student in a University is not going to want an ad showing mortgage rates in America, they are going to want something new and exciting!

In the long run, I feel this can really improve businesses idea's aswell as profit as money will not be wasted on needless adverts aimed towards people that will never be interested in them. Facenook helps by using a selective approach.

I feel Interactive Advertising is the way forward for companies, an all websites, not just Facebook as it allows for feedback but also lets you know about other products you could be interested in because of your friends habits.
